A concerning trend has emerged in Auckland's public transportation sector, with attacks on drivers and passengers more than doubling over the past two years, according to Auckland Transport (AT).
In the first half of 2024, 33 bus driver assaults were reported—up from 21 in 2023’s same period. Last year, drivers faced 51 physical assaults and over 120 cases of verbal abuse. Passenger incidents also surged: New Lynn station reported 215 incidents, while Britomart saw 679, including over 100 cases of disorderly
behaviour.
These rising tensions are often linked to stress and frustration among passengers.
